We have our two students, Renata from Paraguay and Jacob from Norway preparing to arrive in Tacoma by the end of August in order to enroll at Stadium High School. Youth Exchange needs two host families approved and ready to go by August 1st. The application process takes a minimum of two weeks to gain approval as a host family. Each family hosts one of the incoming students for a period of 3 months. If you can't do it, perhaps you have a friend or family member that might be interested! Renata and Jacob are eager to meet their first host family. We will need 3 host families per student for the exchange year. Our wonderful In Bound RYE expert, Diane Tilstra can help you prepare for this engaging experience. You may be surprised to see how easy it is to host a student. Please call Diane at 206-948-8309 or email: mdtilstra@aol.com if you want more information!

The House that Rotary Built We had a wonderful meeting on June 7 as we presented a reproduction of our check to Habitat for Humanity. We have learned that the house we will be building is in Tillicum and that our efforts will begin this summer. Maureen Fife and Elliot Stockstad delivered the "wall of hope" stud, which will be at our meetings for each of us to sign and will then be placed in the house we construct. There will be opportunities throughout the summer for all of us to be involved. Can't swing a hammer or pound a nail, or raise a wall? Maybe you can serve refreshments to the workers. This is going to be a wonderful opportunity for us to all work side by side and change lives in Pierce County!

Reflections from the meeting of June 28 from Kirsten Willis |
The annual Turnover Program for the Rotary Club of Tacoma #8 was called to order with the ringing of the bell at 12:06pm. President Mark Anderson welcomed everyone to his last official day at the podium and gave thanks to Jace Dwinell, Heritage Bank, for serving as the meeting sponsor. The invocation was given by Cynthia Darland. She was recently inspired by the actor and 2018 honoree of the MTV Generation Award Chris Pratt. She shared his 9 essential rules for life including, #1 Breathe – if you don’t, you will suffocate. #3 Don’t be a turd. #5 It doesn’t matter what it is. Earn it. #9 Nobody is perfect. Carlyn Roy,Tapco led the National Anthem followed by the 4‑way Test. Jeff Albers, Wilson and Albers and new member Brenda Gasper, Brooks Dental Studio brought microphones to our members with guests, including the Rev. Josam Kariuki, Assistant Governor District 9212 - Kenya. President Mark introduced our meeting sponsor Jace Dwinell, Heritage Bank, who I am sure had an inspirational presentation but he yielded his sponsorship time to the program. Also leaving extra time with no presentation was the lack of birthdays to celebrate. As one of his last official duties, President Mark, celebrated the following anniversaries: Julie Foley, Jeremy Fogelquist, Christian Anderson, Jim Boardman, Jace Dwinell and Malcolm Russell. President Mark announced the need for volunteers to sign-up for Camp Goodtimes on July 19th. We also had the honor of hearing from Rev. Josam Kariuki, “Joe”, who presented our club with a banner from the Rotary Club of Gigil in Kenya where he was the Charter President. Before turning over his leadership, President Mark shared a few of the accomplishments from this year. Highlights include a very successful auction and $79,000 pledged for Habitat for Humanity. Giving out 20 scholarships totaling $32,800, plus 20 grants to local programs with $85,000. We donated 13,624 books and 9 little free libraries to our community. We managed and invested in four World Community Service grants and completed two. We also started with 251 members and ended with 270 who will begin gathering together at the Tacoma Yacht Club in November. It was with emotion and a few puns that President Mark and our club received the Rotary Presidential Citation for 2017-2018, one of just six clubs in our area. With much thanks he then called forward President Elect Linda Kaye to present the Club President pin; then President Linda Kaye presented Immediate Past President Mark with a Past President pin. President Linda Kaye was pleased to introduce the Turnover Program or Law and Order: Rotary 8 Unit. This episode featured: Christina Turner as the Judge, Libby Catalinich as the Prosecutor, Chris Serface as Mark’s Defense Lawyer, Elliot Stockstad as the Bailiff, President Linda Kaye Briggs, as the Court Reporter, Geoff Oakley, Amy Wigstrom and Rusty George as the Witnesses, Maria DeVore, Carlyn Roy and Steve Smith as the Jury. “All that Jazz” from the ensemble got the scene started as we learned that the Defendant, Mark, had been charged with exceeding the pun quota, preaching about his choir, and unfairly bragging about one branch of the armed forces – the Navy – which of course had Mark pleading not guilty! For evidence the Jury got to hear about the “Razzle Dazzle”, aka “Funny Punny”, but the Prosecutor had to object to the use of musical theater to engage the Jury. More evidence came from the first witness who had personally experienced some bad jokes by the current administration, unfortunately the witness has cooked up a few bad jokes of his own. The next witness, Ms. BeBe Songbird, was able to establish that the defendant is not able to reach the notes of a choir such as “Breath of Fresh Air”. To close the case the Prosecutor called an expert witness with evidence of how the defendant pushed his Navy on the club. With evidence that was right on the mark…the Jury had their deliberations and found Mark – guilty – of being a great President! With much hoopla and help from the Past Presidents Mark was taken away in the paddy wagon to the final song “This is Me: Rotary!” After much applause and a standing ovation from the crowd President Linda Kaye came forward to wrap up the meeting and invite members to head for Galleyside ringing the bell at 1:20pm.
