The Giving Tree Is Emptying!
It is that time of year when Tacoma Rotary 8 members show their generosity for the community by making the holidays bright for children at three local nonprofit organizations. The Giving Tree was full of paper ornaments on Nov. 15 and members picked up over 100 tags. At the Nov. 29 meeting we will have the remaining ornaments. On each ornament will be the name of a child from either the YWCA, New Phoebe House, Salvation Army or Communities in Schools. The tag will also include information about what that child would like to receive. There is also the opportunity to purchase a $25 gift card for Target, Walmart, Fred Meyer or Safeway. Fellow Rotarians Miriam Barnett, Cindy Grady or Jennifer Wedderman will be tracking the ornaments so after you pick an ornament(s), they will enter your name on a tracking list to assure that every child is covered. Bring gifts back, unwrapped, with the ornament taped to the gift on either December 6 or 13 (this is a Thursday at 5 meeting). You can bring items to the meeting or you can drop them off at the Rotary office at the Landmark during office hours 830-5 on Monday and Tuesday this week and then 11-26 through Dec 13. Pat Steel will once again play Santa and help deliver the gifts to the nonprofits. Any questions? Please contact Miriam at mbarnett@ywcapiercecounty.org or 253 341 6285. Thank you so much for sharing your Rotary spirit of service above self!

Welcome new member !
At our meeting on November 15 we welcomed new member Jacki Farrar. Jacki was born in Washington, but moved to Florida, where she was a member of the Belleview Rotary Club. She moved back to Tacoma and works for Moss Adams. In looking for a way to become engaged in the community she selected our club as her new Rotary family. At her first meeting she signed up to join with others at the Toys for Kids shopping spree at 11 pm on 12-12. Jacki is a skilled horsewomen having trained and competed in three day events for many years. Be sure to introduce yourself to Jacki at an upcoming meeting.
The Literacy Committee would like to continue our commitment to supporting the Salishan community and stewarding the little free libraries in that neighborhood, but we need your talents! The libraries are getting lots of use and are in need of some minor repairs. We’re looking for some Rotary “Bob the Builders”. We need Rotarians with some woodworking or handyman/woman skills, who could step up and make minor repairs on one or two libraries…like making some replacement doors, updating hinges and caulking the windows. We have a “Rotary Bob” hard hat for you to pick up and wear – then snap a selfie once it’s repaired – and we’ll share it out on Facebook and in Gearshift as an inspiration for other Rotarians! If you can take on a library and make repairs within the next few weeks, please contact Susan Barbeau at susanb@first5fundamentals.org or Sherri Stanton at sstanton@bates.ctc.edu.
During this month of giving thanks, and since we are celebrating Rotary Foundation Month, we would like to express special thanks to those members who have given to Rotary International this year.
