Chris Staudinger - Ghosts of Tacoma
Use this link to register by Wednesday

Enjoy this chance to learn about the haunted history of Tacoma.

Chris and Tawny Staudinger have traveled around the globe together as award-winning travel writers and videographers since they met on Mount Kilimanjaro 10 years ago. After experiencing more than 50 countries, they decided on Tacoma as a place to call home in 2014.

“When we chose a home base, we knew we wanted to continue sharing travel experiences with people, but this time as tour guides,” said Chris Staudinger. Their idea came to fruition in August 2016, when they paired with their longtime friends and board-game partners, Jackie and Paul Richter, to create Pretty Gritty Tours. Today, the team leads tours to everything from spooky haunts to historical neighborhoods.

Welcome Phillip Curiale
Phill joined our club on October 17.  He is  from Orange County, California, and attended undergrad at U.C. Davis and  moved to South Carolina where he became a deputy sheriff. He realized he wanted to increase his earning potential and enrolled in law school at the University of South Carolina. After graduating, he practiced in Columbia, SC representing distressed homeowners, saving their homes from foreclosure.
He and his wife recently moved to Washington with their little girl, where he has a firm in Tacoma – Anderson Hostnik PLLC, soon to be Curiale Hostnik PLLC. Phill is looking forward to engaging in Rotary and the community.

Polio Plus Raffle Prize won by Marty Lough
The PGG/Foundations Committee enjoyed a great celebration of World Polio Day last week. Thanks to all of our members who purchased raffle tickets we raised $810 for Polio Plus!  We have also had 18 members sign up to be part of the Polio Plus Society.  If you are giving $100 a year to Polio through Project Greater Good, you have taken the first step, now you just need to commit to staying at $100 annually until we can declare our world Polio Free!  You can pick up the pledge form at a meeting or contact the office and one will be emailed to you. What an amazingly generous club we have!!

Reflections from the meeting of October 24 from Debbie Regala
President Carol called the meeting to order, reminding us it was World Polio Day. Christina Turner gave the invocation, Carlyn Roy led us in the National Anthem and the Four Way Test, and Barbara Mead accompanied her on the piano. We were joined by 5 guests; at least 3 of whom are interested in joining Rotary 8! Anniversaries included: Sharon Jaffee-5 years; Cynthia Darland-11 years; Kathi Willis-28 years and Jeff Rounce-32 years.
In celebration of World Polio Day, Rusty Hersey, co-chair of Project Greater Good, reminded us that the effort to eradicate Polio was begun in 1985 and Rotary International took up the Global Eradication Initiative in 1988.  Partners in the effort include the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Last year Rotary 8 had 130 donors to Project Greater Good (PGG) with pledges of $66,000 including $6,560 for Polio Plus.  This year’s goal is $75,000 from 195 donors.  So far PGG has 129 donors and pledges of $70,000.  Polio Plus donations so far are $9,765; the Gates Foundation will provide a triple match making it $29,295!  Flyers with more information were on the tables and those who have not yet made a donation or pledge were encouraged to consider making one.
Linda Kaye Briggs talked and showed photo memories about her trip to India in 2015 with 13 others from Rotary 8 to provide oral polio vaccine to children. Linda Kaye called it a life-changing experience. The slides were both joyful and moving.
President Carol reminded us that the nominating committees are working to recruit members for 4 open board positions and for Vice President who will serve as President (2022-2023) and Secretary (2020-2022).
There were sign-up sheets for an EFN Break Bag Pack on November 23 and December 14.
President Carol expressed thanks to those who volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul and Tacoma Rescue Mission during the last week. Several members provided a True Confession.  The highlight was Heather Faverman announcing she is glad to be back after one year and she has been declared CANCER FREE. Carol thanked everyone for their confessions, thanked those who helped with the meeting and encouraged all of us to be People of Action.

Thought for the Week
