WELCOME NEW MEMBER

We welcomed our newest member to the club on July 30.  Barbara Wyatt is a returning member with past service from 1987-2000. We are thrilled to have her back.  Linn Larsen introduced his wife, who he actually met through Rotary. Barbara is not only a former member, but was also received a Rotary Scholarship to study abroad. She spent much of her career in the cable television industry and was part of the early evolution. She currently serves as the CFO of Larsen Commercial and Industrial Realtors.  If you have a little time on your hands please enjoy this video where you will have the opportunity to learn more about our newest member!
Our Communications Committee with great leadership from Co-Chairs Chris Serface and Christina Turner are holding their first meeting of the year on Wednesday, August 12 at 430 on Zoom. They are looking for members who have time and interest in helping us enhance our communications channels. Since we are not seeing one another it's even more important for us to keep members informed and engaged. Please consider lending your time and talents to this committee.

Rotary DEI Book Club August Choice: So You Want to Talk about Race?

Rotary 8 is starting a Book Club in connection with the new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. To get started we have chosen the first book: So You Want to Talk about Race by Ijeoma Oluo.  If you have not read this book yet, please read it this month of August and we will be setting an early September date to gather, by Zoom unfortunately, and discuss the contents of the book.  During that meeting we will together choose the next book or perhaps a movie or other video presentation.
We will announce the upcoming topic at the beginning of each month. You can join in for one, some or all books and presentations! Email President Kathryn at kjudge512@gmail.com or the Office at clubadmin@rotary.org to sign up for this first book, or to be on the short list for upcoming meetings.  We will be polling interested persons about the best time and day for our Zoom meetings to discuss the book or presentations.

Tacoma Rescue Mission Sack Lunch Project   Our next date for packing is August 11, we need volunteers! Let Seth or the office know by August 7 if you are willing to put together 10 meat sandwiches (with no condiments) and deliver them to the office on Monday, August 10 by 4 or Tuesday, August 11 by 11. We will have volunteers to fill the sacks with chips, water, cookies and a piece of fruit. You can also use this tracking sheet to sign up on line. For questions contact Seth Kaplowitz at seth.tacoma8@gmail.com or call or email the office at 253-473-7723, clubadmin@rotary8.org
July 25 and 26th saw an amazing group of volunteers show up to paint the home of a 93 year old Tacoma gentleman, who has lived in this house for 77 years!  Special thanks to  John Schneider who recruited a wonderful group of Rotarians, their families and friends.  The job was done safely and with care, thanks to our members who invested sweat equity on some of the warmest days of the summer! Marsha Burns, Zach Entwistle, Chris Hays, Sharon Jaffee, Diane Kelleher, Stacey Ogle, Jim Shoemake, Sherri Stanton, Jennifer Weddermann and Amanda Weidman.

Reflections from the July 30 meeting by Greer Todhunter
President Kathryn welcomed everybody to the last July meeting of 2020 – this month we’ve been celebrating rotary starting its new year.
Dean Hanks provided a wonderful reflection based on 4 way test in a question and reflection format. We usually say the 4 way test as a declaration, not asking questions as a test.
  • Do I allow myself to learn and grow?
  • Am I judgmental or critical of others with my words or actions?
  • Do I use my words, my actions, my position, my station in life to lift people up?
  • What actions will I take to live up to the 4 way test as a Rotarian? What can I do in my life to make a difference as a Rotarian?
Jennifer Wedderman, her daughter Lily Hay and friend Katelyn Turner treated us to national anthem as an a cappella trio.
We welcomed visiting Rotarian from Lakewood, District Governor Greg Horn, and guest attendee, Katy Bardizian, who works at the Doty Group and is interested in getting to know more about the club and perhaps joining.
The group celebrated the anniversaries of Maddie Merton (2 years), Monique Nadeau (11 years), and Ed Ramos (11 years).
Linn Larsen introduced our 3rd new Rotarian of the year to our club, Barbara Wyatt. Barbara was born in St. Louis to Canadian parents, moved to Winnipeg Canada (which she told us is colder than Mars, -36 degrees). She attended the University of Kentucky for her bachelors degree and  Syracuse University for her masters. After graduation, she began working in cable, discovered Rotary, and was honored to receive a full year Rotary International scholarship for post graduate studies. She worked in Western Europe, then discovered Tacoma, WA while working in media, and was introduced into the best Rotary club in the world, made friends, met and married her husband Linn. They now work together repurposing industrial commercial properties. Barbara told everybody how thrilled she is to be home again at Rotary 8.
President Kathryn introduced President Elect Kim Bedier, who in turn introduced our speaker, Mayor Victoria Woodards. Kim mentioned that Mayor Woodards’ destiny is to lead the City of Destiny during one of its hardest times. Mayor Woodards started off with noting that there are two current pandemics – COVID being one and systemic racism in our country being a second.
There is a severe uptick of cases in Tacoma and Pierce County, especially since Phase 2 began in June. The average 14 day case rate prior to Phase 2 was only 12, and now is 139. While we are increasing, what can we do? Our city is past the Stay Home, Stay Healthy order, and Mayor Woodards asked what we can do now so we don’t need to go back to staying home. The answer is simple – wear your masks and stay 6 feet apart! By living out these mandates we can make a difference. She invited us to all continue to take part in these rules and to physically distance.
How is Tacoma responding? Starting with business, the City has invested $1 million into small businesses for stabilization who were able to receive up to $15,000 in aid. There were 69 applications for this. Loan payments will be deferred for 12 months. Another $1 million has been received from the US Economic Development Administration for small business financing that will be put in the City’s revolving loan fund. Set aside $645,000 in CDBG funding to use for small business assistance. Last week, $518,000 in new CARES funding for Tacoma Minority Business Development Agency. There has also been focus on families – there has been a rental assistance program set up ($1.2 million) in partnership with LASA and are working on a way to provide mortgage assistance. 179 payments totaling $160,000 was done in the first round, and they just went into application phase 2 and they received 146 unduplicated applications and hope to have funding out in the next couple of weeks. Applicants get a one-time payment of up to $1000. A Rental Assistance Fund has been set up in partnership with GTCF at the request of the community, and to date there have been 12 gifts totaling $2800, and she invited us to donate to this fund (www.cityoftacoma.org/compassionate). $2.4 million through TPU has been aside to help with utility bills. So far 10,081 families have been helped with their utilities totaling $1.8 million.
“Uplift Tacoma” has been put together to help community members utilize their creativity and participate in cultural activities. Organizations that provide an arts community and support for the arts were shared, and it’s a great way to lift our spirits.
She presented the citywide budget of $3.5 billion, and the general fund is where the bulk of the budget is spent ($514.6 million, 15% of total budget), which provides everything from street repairs, utilities, funding for public services, etc. Because of COVID, Tacoma is facing a $64.3 million deficit. Our city has not been able to realize any CARES funding as they focus on communities with over 500,000 citizens. Sales and business tax make up 44% of the general fund budget which is what is bringing the hardest hit with loss of consumer spending and closure of stores.
How much money do we spend on public safety? Police and fire services represent 65% of overall budget. There will be some difficult decisions that need to be made, not only for this budget, but in planning the next biennium budget. There have been staff furloughs, halting of projects that hadn’t been started before COVID, stopped moving forward with programs that weren’t started, as well as capital projects. Early retirement incentives have been offered to seek to close the gap.
We can all be engaged by giving input of how we as Tacoma citizens would like to see the money be used in the 2021-2022 biennium budget by using “Balancing Act” at www.cityoftacoma.org/budgetdevelopment.
Mayor Woodards and the City Council have committed themselves to transform the system in Tacoma, but in the midst of that they will do reforms along the way, including deaths in custody. The Manny Ellis case has been eye opening in our community, and his death wasn’t made aware until almost 3 months after the occurrence. In June, when we first took a look at which “8 Can’t Wait” steps of reform, the police force realized that they do all of them (Ban chokeholds and strangleholds, require de-escalation, duty to intervene, ban shooting at moving vehicles, require warning before shooting, require exhausting all alternatives before shooting, require use of force continuum, and require comprehensive reporting).
Body cams will be another interim reform, and the City is trying to work with the state and police will be outfitted with them by January and trained by March. It’s not as easy as purchasing cameras and having them deploy the next day.
Resolution 40622 will guide the work we do around transformation in our community. The words are good, but what will be accomplished? Guiding principles and a work plan of transformation with dates and timelines of what will be done and when they will be done. All information can be found on the website. Full transportation will take time, it will not be easy, but we are in real unprecedented times and we have the opportunity to make real changes like the ones that should have happened during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's.
Mayor Woodards invited us to take out our phones and text “I’m all in” to 253-650-0588. Rotary is built on compassion, and we are compassionate, but to get through these pandemics, it’s going to take our compassion to understand and not just tolerate our neighbors. We can practice what the program “Compassionate Tacoma” preaches by caring about others.
Carol Webster spoke up, as Rotary 8 just started DEI committee, and we are looking to transform ourselves and would like to work with the broader committee as a partner and ally. She asked Mayor Woodards for suggestions on how to be effective at this.
Debbie Regala was called upon and offered a suggestion. She heard last night on the news there was an interesting tool called a bolo for police that shoots a bolo that would wrap around somebody’s legs and incapacitate them in a non-harmful way. Reporter said it didn’t hurt at all but he couldn’t move. Mountlake Terrace is using this system.
John Schneider was to give us a report on Paint Tacoma Beautiful and the participation of Rotarians last weekend, but there was some technical difficulty. We saw before and after photos of the house and it looked great, and Rotary 8 did a wonderful job helping the 93 year old resident who needed help with painting his house. Thanks to Marsha Burns, Zach Entwistle, Chris Hays, Sharon Jaffee, Diane Kelleher, Stacey Ogle, Jim Shoemake, Sherri Stanton, Jennifer Weddermann and Amanda Weidman, for volunteering, and to Gil Quante who provided refreshments.
A big thank you to the volunteers who made 50 meat and cheese sandwiches- Jan Brazzell, Becky Fontaine, Sharon Jaffee, Diane Kelleher, Dorothy Lewis, Amy Wigstrom and Barbara Wyatt. Contact Seth Kaplowitz to be a part of group to make sandwiches for August 11.
Time for True Confessions – President Kathryn bragged on Lisa Mansfield who was elected through a 14 person contested election to the WSBA Board of Governors. Congratulations Lisa!
Cindy Niemi shared of her excursion she went on with her husband – 130 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail beginning at the Gorge at Cascade Locks and went all the way to Old Snowy Mountain. Invited us all to follow their trip on Facebook or Instagram, and to get out and enjoy nature.
President Kathryn thanked everybody involved with today’s meeting and dismissed the club.
