WHAT A NIGHT !

Members of our Life Christian Interact Group were on hand to help us sell out all of our desserts!
As our President Linda Kaye is fond of saying "it takes a village" It took a village of volunteers and hundreds of hours to pull off another wonderful event.  Along with the Interact Students we were honored to have help from The Daffodil Court and the Bellarmine Softball team.
Please say thank to your auction committee - Monique Nadeau - Chair, Cindy Grady - Procurement, Carol Duris & Mike Dunbar - Sponsorships, Rusty Hersey & Miriam Barnett - Volunteers, Kirsten Willis - Desserts Kim Bedier & Stacey Ogle - Decorations, Rusty George - Design, Chris Serface - MC, Christina Turner - Raffle & Announcer, Stephen Deal - Video Producer, Linda Kaye Briggs, Libby Catalinich, Brien Elvins, Maria Harlow, Cindy Niemi, Jennifer Wedderman, Amanda Weidman and  Carolyn Weyrick

Additional volunteers; Jacob Christensen, Cynthia Darland, Robin Echtle, Jacki Farrar, Sally Glover, Katie Guild (Outbound RYE Exchange Student), Kelly Lane, John McMasters, Dane Meyer, Cap Pearson, Rob Pfarr, Gil Quante, Renata Ramirez, Jeff Rounce, Diane Tilstra, Taylor Webb (Outbound RYE Student) and Carol Webster
What a delight it was to have these young ladies help us at the auction and then visit us last week.  It was impressive to hear of their plans for continuing their education.  The future is bright as they continue to pursue their life goals.  Just like Rotarian's looking for ways to serve, they stayed after the meeting with their chaperones and helped clear the tables and ready the room for the next activity.

Reflections from the meeting of April 4 from Jim Henderson

President Linda Kaye Briggs rang the bell right at 12 Noon for the weekly meeting of Tacoma #8 Rotary at The Salvation Army.   This is one of my favorite meetings each year when we are joined by the Princesses from the Daffodil Festival in their lovely yellow dresses at tables adorned with Daffodils.  Pamela Transue, Past Service – Education, provided our invocation talking about the wonders of nature.  Ali Criss, Financial Insights led us in the national anthem followed by the 4 way test.  Today’s meeting was sponsored by Andrew Imholt, Pilkey Hopping & Ekberg with the meeting sponsor time donated to Missy Zenczak, United Way of Pierce County.
Members with guests were asked to stand as mics were brought around by Jan Brazzell, Advancement Consulting and Bryan Flint, South OutreachJacob Christensen our inbound exchange student from Norway explained why he was on crutches, after injuring his knee in soccer practice.  There were a number of other guest at today’s meeting, including 5 prospective members.  President Linda Kaye thanked all those who attended this year’s auction – Mission Possible - and who donated to the Raise the Paddle.  She said that it is still possible to donate to the raise the paddle for the next week.
Missy Zenczak, United Way came forward for the meeting sponsor announcement and invited everyone to attend the April 17, Celebrate Community event.  Next Harrison Laird, CBRE, came forward to help celebrate April Birthdays.  Present to celebrate their birthdays were Don Sheppard, Debbie Regala, Carol Webster, Chris Hays, Barry Benson, Bill Baarsma, Sherri Stanton, Pamela Transue, Peter Norman, Jim Harris, and Eveyln Ryberg.  Harrison then updated everyone on the number of new members introduced to the club since July 1 and did a drawing for a Cedarbrook Lodge gift card to a member who has sponsored someone to the club in that period.  The lucky winner was Cindy Niemi.
President Linda Kaye then celebrated this week’s anniversaries:  Rob Novasky – 7 years; Bill Pickles – 20 years; Larry Hosley – 31 years, Dick Heaton II – 40 years; Jim Merritt – 42 years, and Glenn Everitt – 44 years.
Then the Daffodil Princesses were called forward to introduce themselves, the school they represent and what their future college plans are.  President Linda Kaye called them all smart, bright, articulate and ambitious.  We were reminded about the upcoming events for the Festival – the Grand Floral Parade, the Junior Parade and the Marine Parade.
Then she provided a brief history about the ‘Community Service Award’ which began in November 1972.  The purpose of the award is to recognize a non-Rotarian resident of Pierce County who has served his/her community in a manner that exemplifies the Rotary ideal of ‘Service above Self’.  This year’s winner is Shalisa Hayes.  Here with us today were two individuals to share some stories about the impact that Shalisa has had on our community.  First up was Marty Campbell who said she embodies service above self, and was part of the process, every step of the way, in creating an Eastside Community Center.  She led the way and had a vision for the center and worked to bring more voices to the table.  The second speaker was Jasmin McCane.  Shalisa’s son was one of her friends.  She said Shalisa is in her heart and a person she looks up to.   A financial contribution in the name of Shalisa will be made to the Estelitas Library.  She accepted the award and gave some brief comments saying while she lost her son to senseless gun violence, she formed the Billy Ray Shirley III Foundation and set out to transform her pain into realizing Billy Ray’s vision of creating a safe haven for East Tacoma youth to pursue positive activities.  Team Billy Ray gave her purpose through his death.  Shalisa received a standing ovation.
Dan Bogart, Banner Bank, then came forward to invite everyone to next week’s ‘Thursdays at 5’ at Banner Bank in downtown Tacoma.  There was time for some True Confessions.  Coming forward were Past President Jeff Lovely for some trips for vacation and skiing; Missy Zenczak and Andrew Imholt who just finished a Leadership Academy; Sharon Benson who drove her daughter to meet her biological siblings; Miriam Barnett who gave a shout out to the Daffodil Princesses for helping at the auction; Past President Larry Treleven a trip to Tokyo, and Stacey Ogle who is celebrating a new granddaughter.
We were reminded about the upcoming Business Expo, EFN repack, and helping upgrading the lodge playground at the Salvation Army facility on Sixth Avenue.   Tonight’s social will be held at Moshi Moshi at 110B N. Tacoma Avenue.   President Linda Kaye rang the bell at 12:50pm and urged everyone to go out and Re-Ignite your Rotary.
